Supervision of GP registrars/rural generalists (RGs)

Vocational general practice training in Australia is based on the ‘apprenticeship model’, where registrars/RGs consult independently with patients, but practice under the supervision of accredited GP supervisors. GP supervisors therefore play an essential role in the development of registrars into confident and competent GPs.

External Clinical Teaching Visits (ECTVs)

The External Clinical Teaching Visit (ECTV) is a key learning and workplace-based assessment (WBA) activity for GP registrars in Australian general practice. ECTVs provide the opportunity for an objective external educator to observe, and give feedback on, a session of practice in ’close-to-normal’ circumstances. ECTVs are also a useful tool to identify those registrars who require extra support. 

The supervisor plays an important role in maximising the educational utility of the ECTV. This includes interaction with the teaching visitor, interpretation of the report, and discussion with registrar.

Supporting the new registrar starting in general practice

The transition from hospital work to consulting patients in the general practice setting is highly challenging. The GP supervisor plays an important role to support the new registrar as they settle into community practice.

Supervisor Professional Development

Supervisor Liaison Officers (SLOs)

The role of the Supervisor Liaison Officer (SLO) is essential in supporting a strong, high-quality GP training sector.

SLOs are employed by RACGP, ACRRM, and RVTS to represent and assist supervisors of GP/RG registrars across Australia. Their work includes:

  • Advocating for the individual and collective needs of GP supervisors
  • Contributing to policy and process development to support best-practice training

Registrar Examinations

Fellowship exam support

Preparation for fellowship examinations with RACGP and/or ACRRM can cause enormous stress for many registrars. As a supervisor, it is therefore essential to know how best to support your registrar, both educationally and in terms of pastoral care (stress and mental health).

Top tips to help your registrar prepare

  • Focus on skill development, not knowledge
  • Teach to your strengths
  • Consider non-clinical domains
  • Don’t get bogged down with the format – teach generic skills
  • Ask the registrar to document their reasoning in the notes
  • Ask the registrar to review the competency rubric and self-rate to prioritise learning needs
  • Use the GPSA guides and teaching plans
  • Understand what is being assessed
  • Undertake focussed practice-based teaching, including random case analysis (arguably the best way to help them with their exam preparation)
  • Monitor your registrar’s anxiety and stress
  • Provide pastoral care
  • Direct your registrar to appropriate clinical resources
  • Encourage your registrar to engage with exam preparation resources and activities and learn from their clinical exposure

Supervising International Medical Graduate (IMG) learners

It is well recognised that IMGs can face a range of challenges while learning in the general practice setting. GPSA recognises the critical role that GP supervisors play in supporting IMG registrars and other IMG GPs in training.
