The placement process for registrars is a variation of the straight employment model we use for recruiting our other employees.u00a0

Rather than placing an advert in an online platform practices must go through a process overseen by the training provider.u00a0

The need to ensure our practice becomes an employer of choice remains the same however.u00a0 Registrars have a choice in the practice that they go to and will interview us just as much as we interview them.u00a0 Practices that have a great reputation for support and providing learning opportunities put themselves in a good position to attract candidates.

u00a0Ideally, the process to build the practiceu2019s positive reputation can start earlier than that with medical student placements. A medical student who has enjoyed their placement and been impressed with the quality of the education as well as the culture and support provided will be keen to return as a registrar, knowing that the practice is ideally positioned to help them with their general practice journey.

Practices have opportunities to secure future registrars by building relationships that remain in the studentu2019s memory long after they leave the practice.

The registrar placement process varies slightly between the ACCRM and RACGP but the essentials are the same:
n
    n
  • practices register their capacity for training placements by the date advised by the college
  • n
  • registrars and practices are notified when the placement process is open
  • n
  • workforce and practice capacities are considered by the colleges
  • n
  • registrars will apply to the practices
  • n
  • practices shortlist those they want to interview
  • n
  • practices arrange interviews
  • n
  • decide which registrar is the best fit for their practice
  • n
  • referees are contacted
  • n
  • offers are made
  • n
  • registrars accept or reject the offer
  • n
  • employment agreements are sent and signed
  • n
  • employment paperwork/online forms are completed
  • n
Not all practices will end up with a registrar even though they have capacity.u00a0 Practices may have a capacity for three registrars but are only allocated one placement by the colleges.
